Inbox Zero
Connie Crosby (via Twitter) spoke highly of this video and the concept of Inbox Zero. The video is of Merlin Mann, the editor and founder of 43Folders.com, talking at Google in July 2007.
I'm watching/listening to the video now and it is already "striking home."

I was working towards it, and managed to clear out a lot of email, but got a little stuck. I seem to receive a lot of information--details about upcoming work--that I want to retain. Others have told me I then have to move it into a document. Not sure what that accomplishes. Also, he makes it sound like I can work through a batch of email that comes in in about 10 minutes. By the time I "do" the work for each of the email, I find a whole hour has past and more email have come in.
So, I guess I am still working on it. Have you given it a try?
Cheers,
Connie

Connie, I took my 2007 inbox emails and put them in their own folder, which I'll go through later (or just delete). I've been slowly going through the rest of the inbox (2008) and deleting things. But it is slow going, since I can only do for a few minutes at a time. I also am moving things into folders.
The key for me is that we do not WORK in email, we work in other places. I've even shut down email occasionally so I can focus on other things. And do leave some messages unread until I'm ready to deal with them.
But like you, I'm not "there" yet. Maybe one day!

Yes. I find that I am getting better at responding right away--I learned one of my failings was putting off responding, and then would start to procrastinate touching those email for no apparent reason. I keep saying the mantra "become an email ninja" and it helps. Oh--I feel my own blog post coming on!

I'm a terrible email hoarder! But I've been working at cleaning out folders bit by bit. Also guilty of not responding quickly enough. Changing habits is hard, worth the effort though.
