FreeScreencast.com

Yesterday I blogged about a screencast done about LibraryThing. Sheli and Elizabeth used FreeScreencast.com to create that. What is a screencast? According to the web site, "Screencasting is a very simple concept: record your computer screen and sounds while talking about your actions." FreeScreencast.com has software you can use to do this for free and they will host your screencast, too. Likely, you already have everythign else you need on your computer.

If screencasting is unfamiliar to you, take a look at the one Sheli and Elizabeth did. If you're interested in doing one, you might try using FreeScreencast.com first. You might as well use a free service to learn on...and perhaps it will provide all of the features that you need.

  • Hi Jill! FreeScreencast is awesome for starting out! If you get really into it, there are more dynamic programs that will zoom in on your mouse, and allow for editing. Elizabeth said that it's best to be simple and short and not have a script. You want to get the message to your audience quickly and easily (before the information changes)!
    Thanks again! :-)

  • I create screencasts for my public library. Some screencasts serve as supplements to our computer classes, and others help patrons with downloadable audio/video, etc. Catalog-related screencasts for staff and public are in the works.

This project began as my digital library plan for IST676, by the way!

The collection is small, but growing. Have a look.

I use Camtasia to create them. Not free, but versatile and a HUGE time saver: the right tool for the job.

  • Hi Jill, I am the founder of FreeScreencast.com. Thanks for the kind words! Please let me know if I can answer any questions for you. We love the creative and informational casts people create and use to share knowledge.
